Identifying Opportunities in Economic & Regulatory Trends

The Opportunities
      - Economic Trends: Rebound from natural disasters and Baby Boomers are not retiring
      - Regulatory Changes: Bill 429 " Donation and Transfer of Human Tissue" and Snook and red drum are catch-and-release only in some Gulf state waters

Opportunity #1: Rebound from Natural Disasters
  • where did i find it? https://commercial.jpmorganchase.com/pages/commercial-banking/executive-connect/six-key-economic-trends
  • why do i believe this it exists? after natural disasters, such as those that occurred last year in Texas and Florida, there are those surges of activity, especially when it comes to rebuilding and construction. Of course the damage done will outweigh most of the remaking done but there is still that opening for opportunities
  • who will most likely be the prototypical customer? those affected by natural disasters and companies needing help to rebuild, and construction corporations
  • is it relatively easy or difficult to exploit? why? It is an easy opportunity to exploit in the sense that after a natural disasters there will be a lot of need to help rebuild a community but in another perspective not so much because most of the help done after a natural disaster will at times be volunteer
Why do I recognize the opportunity? Having had been in Florida when hurricane Irma hit and observing how people reacted both before and after first hand I have gotten a better understanding of how things occur and work during theses times.

Opportunity #2: Baby Boomers are not retiring
  • where did i find it? https://www.thebalance.com/top-usa-future-economic-trends-3305666
  • why do i believe this it exists? 1. With baby boomers not retiring and rather staying involved to some capacity they can be a new target for entrepreneurial ventures. Baby boomers who have not retired will still be active and if they are still working that means they will have even more money to spend.  2. the article stated that there will be more millennial's looking for freelance gigs so there is a wider variety for newer or different kinds of jobs
  • who will most likely be the prototypical customer? A baby boomer (aged 45-75) - one who is closer to retirement is more ideal - or a millennial that is entering the work force
  • is it relatively easy or difficult to exploit? why? I feel like it would be relatively easy to exploit the baby boomers because they are a new kind of customer who will have that money to spend on things they enjoy. The millennial's may be a bit more difficult to exploit because you have to focus more on what kind of 'job' you could create
Why do I recognize the opportunity? I think I recognize this opportunity because I have family members who could retire but rather stay working to a certain capacity. I see that they at times can be restless and want to do all these kinds of things and have some extra cash to do these things.

Opportunity #3: Bill 429 " Donation and Transfer of Human Tissue"
  • where did i find it? http://www.floridahealth.gov/licensing-and-regulation/newest-legislation/2018-legislation.html
  • why do i believe this it exists? This bill is now requiring the Department of Health to have these educational pamphlets, that must include possible risks and benefits, on particular tissue transplants. From this bill there is the opportunity to create these interesting while informative pamphlets as well as creating informational videos or interactive models.
  • who will most likely be the prototypical customer? The Health Department or hospitals or doctor's office
  • is it relatively easy or difficult to exploit? why? I think it will not be easy nor do I think it will necessarily be difficult. The people who create the educational pamphlet as well as the other possible supplements will need to be careful and aware of the information they include but it should not be too difficult since they should know what they are doing
Why do I recognize the opportunity? When going to the doctor's office I would always be interested in the pamphlets they had available and my mother would always grab a few in order to stay informed on what shots and other procedures would entail. Then in biology class videos and models always helped me understand a topic better.

Opportunity #4: Snook and red drum are catch-and-release only in some Gulf state waters
  • where did i find it? https://content.govdelivery.com/accounts/FLFFWCC/bulletins/20a1099
  • why do i believe this it exists? The recent update was that until they recheck the situation on Sept. 26th/27th the snook and red drum (redfish) fish will only be catch in release in state waters "from the northernmost point of Anna Maria Island in Manatee County to Gordon Pass in Collier County" as a result of the red tide. Therefore I believe there exists an opportunity for there to be an import of these fish into these areas from places where you can keep these fishes. People may want to eat this fish but cant in these affected areas.
  • who will most likely be the prototypical customer? The people who eat fish in these affected areas (he northernmost point of Anna Maria Island in Manatee County to Gordon Pass in Collier County)
  • is it relatively easy or difficult to exploit? why?  I think this would be relatively easy to exploit because there are always those people who want to eat things they do not necessarily have available at that  point in time
Why do I recognize the opportunity? I have visited the areas that are affected and recognize that there are a lot of people who live in these areas and those who visit that love to eat fish of all kinds, especially the fresh caught fish.

  1. Hey Kristin,
I think that your blog post is very good and detailed. All of the opportunities are very relevant and your explanations are good. I really liked the first one especially as I live in Miami and hurricane recovery happens often and can take a long time. There is also definitely an opportunity in fishing because of the declining fish population. Although your explanations were good, I think they could have been a little more explanatory. Overall, good job!

  2. Hey Kristin. I feel like you found some really great opportunities to write about in your post. One of my favorites was the opportunity of importing in red drum and snook fish. The red tide is a serious problem right now, but this class has taught us that problems equal opportunity. I also liked how you organized your post, I was able to see that you answered all the requirements. Great job.
